Please share with everyone what your favorite part of the race was. Was it the night paddling by the glow of the cooling tower lights? Was it the bike trails? Was it the O-course?
If you have any stories about something funny that happened on the course, please share those too. I’ve heard that at least one team had fish jumping into their boat. Another racer had a deer jump across their front bike tire.

Yeah, we had two fish jump in the boat I only saw the one until the take out though. What I really though was well done in this race was that I was never in my kayak for 15 miles straight. At 6’8″ that kills my legs, knees and back so a HUGE thank you for that. I though everything was timed out really well and I was able to enjoy the course instead of just pushing through.
On the final paddle we saw two bald eagles attacking an osprey. I’ve never seen it before and I don’t know what that osprey did but they dogged him for a good 10 mins before they knocked him into the water. We paddled over to the osprey to see if he was really hurt and he didn’t appear to be. The eagles flew off and I hope the osprey had the good common sense after he took of from the water to high tail it away.
Thanks again for a great race!

I most enjoyed the “glow” of the lights around the nuclear reactor that we could see from the trails across New Hill Holleman Rd and from the Harris Lake paddle.
Who would need a compass with that thing lighting up the sky!?

To be perfectly honest, this was my first race and I think I most enjoyed crossing the finish line! Second to that was the scenery on the river. I saw the eagles and osprey, tooI And the BBQ pork was awesome.
Don, Patrick, Jeff and volunteers….I can’t even imagine what an effort it took to put this course together. You are an incredible bunch of people. Thanks for making this happen. (No, that doesn’t necessarily mean that I’ll do another race, Patrick.)

I really liked the harris Lake night paddle section. Though we really stunk it up and got half the points, I like the tactical opportunity for portaging or a long paddle. We hit our portage area OK, found our drop in roads fine, and picked up the points east perfectly.
The San Lee Trails were great as well. This area has so much to offer. I bet you guys from the RDU area take it for granted, but brother let me tell you, down here in the Conway/Myrtle Beach area, we don’t have 1/100th the places to ride offroads that you do.
Next year…more biking to replace the very last paddle section.

I would agree with more Mtn. Biking. The paddling was fun, but of course the low water level and hours of it became quite frustrating!! Overall great course set-up and great work on the part of the race staff. Awesome job! Looking forward to your races next year. Oh yeah, my favorite part of everything is the GREAT maps you guys provide. That has been the best part of your races and the points actually being where you say they will be!!

My favorite part of the race was the end of the kayaking on the Cape Fear. As the bank was full of people cheering us on, I proceeded to fall out of my kayak into the river. I tried to stand up, but felt kind of light-head, so I fell back into the river. My teammates thought that the second and third time that I was just grandstanding…It’s good to laugh at yourself.
After the race, I realized that I had not done a very good job securing my rain fly. So I slept in a puddle, in a wet sleeping bag with a wet dog. It really doesn’t get any better than that…
I’m looking forward to next year’s races!
